2021's Spiral: From the Book of Saw is a Darren Lynn Bousman horror film written by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger. It's Saw's eighth film. Chris Rock, Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson feature in the thriller about a Jigsaw copycat murderer. The series' creators, James Wan and Leigh Whannell, and series veteran Kevin Greutert are executive producers.When Chris Rock expressed a desire to go into the horror genre with 2017's Jigsaw, rumors about a second Saw film started circulating. In the end, the Spierig Brothers, who directed Jigsaw, opted not to return for another picture. Rock is now working on a screenplay by Stolberg and Goldfinger that was publicly unveiled in May of this year. July and August were the months when the remainder of the actors joined, with shooting taking place in Toronto.
Spiral plot?
During the Fourth of July parade, off-duty Detective Marv Bozwick pursues a burglar through a sewage pipe. After being attacked from behind by a person wearing a pig mask, Bozwick wakes to find himself dangling by his tongue in an active subway tunnel and is offered a decision through a recorded message: remove his tongue and survive, or wait until the next train comes, which will kill him. Bozwick, unable to escape the trap in time, is struck and killed by the train. The next day, Captain Angie Garza gives Zeke Banks a new companion, the idealistic novice William Schenk. Banks and Schenk examine the death of Bozwick, and Banks learns that the manner of death is identical to that of the dead Jigsaw Killer.
Emmerson gives Banks a last test, showing him Marcus suspended in the air and steadily losing blood. Emmerson phones 9-1-1 and says he's being chased by a gunman, so a SWAT squad is sent to his area. He gives Banks a handgun with one cartridge and gives him the option to rescue Marcus but let Emmerson escape or murder Emmerson and let Marcus bleed to death. Banks shoots the target to free his father, then fights Emmerson. The SWAT squad enters and accidentally trips a tripwire, yanking Marcus' shackles again. Marcus' arm moves, revealing a gun, so SWAT kills him thinking he's the shooter. Emmerson flees as Banks cries.

The participation of Chris Rock in Spiral: From the Book of Saw
Seeing an opportunity to revitalize both the Saw film series and his own career, Chris Rock contacted Lionsgate with the idea for Spiral (2021).
Rock's character was originally supposed to be linked to Danny Glover's David Tapp from the previous film. Stolberg and Goldfinger decided against going this route since it failed the smell test. Bousman said in May 2021 that talks had taken place regarding bringing Costas Mandylor back as Mark Hoffman in a future film. Bousman and the crew debated whether or not Tobin Bell should reprise his role as Jigsaw until the last day of production, but they thought that having Bell back would make the film seem like a continuation of the Saw series rather than a standalone picture as it was intended. Because Jigsaw was killed off in the third picture, Bousman believed that previous films had done Jigsaw a disservice by utilizing flashbacks to bring him into the tale, and he didn't want to make the same error in Spiral: From the Book of Saw or disrespect Bell's legendary portrayal. Bousman contemplated including Bell in Spiral (2021) by having him perform a Johnny Cash song during the concluding scene, but decided against it because it was too gimmicky.
Why did Tobin Bell not appear in Spiral?
Tobin Bell did not reprise his normal role as Jigsaw in Spiral (2021), making it the first Saw film to do so.
In spite of the fact that discussions continued even after the first screening and into the post-production phase, Stolberg stated in an interview with Bloody Disgusting that Jigsaw was never included in any draft of the screenplay for Spiral (2021) because they felt that including Jigsaw would undermine their goal of moving the franchise in a new direction rather than diminishing it. The Spiral: From the Book of Saw Killer's portrayer, William Schenk, was portrayed by John Kramer in the original film, and Stolberg and Goldfinger wanted to include an after-credits sequence where Kramer met Schenk as a child and bonded with him, maybe giving him the puppet he uses as the Spiral: From the Book of Saw Ki.
Since the film's killer is a Jigsaw copycat who is different from the original, it was decided to replace Billy the Puppet with a new puppet named Mr. Snuggles. Bousman thought that if the original Jigsaw was replaced, the original puppet should also be replaced with a new one so that the new killer can't be compared to the old one. The production team thought that using Bell's voice for Mr. Snuggles could have led to questions about the relationship between the two killers. In an early draft, Jigsaw's voice was used, but it turned out to be a digitally altered version of his voice. All of the speeches were also originally recorded versions of Jigsaw's voice with the words in a different order to show that the Spiral Killer had digitally rearranged the words. The moviemakers had a hard time replacing Bell's voice with a new one for the killer. Before he chose the voice made by the computer, Bousman tried out many voices of women, children, and men. The final voice in the movie was chosen just two days before the sound mix was done.
In the making of Spiral (2021)
On May 16, 2019, the pre-production phase of the film began formally. In addition to Burg and Koules serving as producers, the film will be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who previously oversaw the series. Samuel L. Jackson decided to portray Chief Marcus Banks because he wanted to experience something new, such as the climax sequence in which his character is hung up like a marionette. Despite being a Saw fan, Marisol Nichols preferred to view David Fincher's Seven instead of the other films in preparation for the part. Patrick McManus auditioned for the part of Detective Marv Bozwick, but was called back to portray Peter Dunleavy, while Dan Petronijevic was cast as Bozwick, in an effort to pursue an acting career on film and television after years of playing on stage.
What was it like filming Spiral?
On July 8, 2019, in Toronto, Ontario, under the working title of The Organ Donor, Jordan Oram was the cinematographer for the film's first shoot. It was reported that the picture will include the likes of Rock, Jackson, Minghella, and Nichols. According to Lionsgate CEO Joe Drake, the studio believes that Samuel L. Jackson, Chris updated post Rock, Max Minghella, and Marisol Nichols, together with the rest of the Saw cast, will make this picture a unique entry in the franchise's canon, and they can't wait to show it to fans. This was Saw at its most extreme. On set, Rock contributed rewrites and reworked his character's entrance sequence. As Bousman put it, a trap scene had to be omitted from the film because it was too gruesome.
Filming officially ended on August 28, 2019. Dev Singh finished the editing during post-production.

Many film reviews thought Spiral to be a truly scary, albeit unevenly paced, detective thriller, but criticized its writing for failing to communicate the father-and-son bond of its key protagonists.

After an entire SUMMER OF SAW, you should surely know the routine by now: a murderer is on the run who doesn't kill his victims directly, but rather puts them to the test using creative as well as terrifying mechanical contraptions. Another film critic said that it wasn't exactly a waste of an idea. But the franchise doesn't need to be changed up either. Rock's involvement in Spiral (2021) gives it some fresh blood, but after a promising start, the movie just turns out to be a pretty good Saw movie with some bigger names than usual—one whose dreary lighting and procedural storyline remind me most of David Fincher's Se7en. If the point of the game was to see if a new take on a long-running franchise could stand up to the sequel machine, then the game is over.
Lionsgate TV chairman Kevin Beggs told Deadline Hollywood in April 2021 that Lionsgate TV is in early negotiations to produce a Spiral TV series with Mark Burg and Oren Koules' Twisted Television.
